WHERE can the ceremony be held in Rome?

In Italy all Catholic weddings must take place inside a church. Priests are not allowed to celebrate a Catholic wedding in a garden, in the countryside or in any location that is not a consecrated Catholic church. The wide variety of churches can respond to any requirement. There are large and small, old and new, simple and ornate and the ceremony can be intimate or monumental, modern or traditional.

Protestant/Non-denominational Christian or Jewish Weddings can be held anywhere your heart desires unless your religion has particular restrictions. For most non-Europeans these ceremonies are symbolic and are not legally recognized. To make them legal, you will need to do a civil ceremony as well, either in your home country or at a civil hall in Italy prior to the ceremony.

Civil ceremonies must be held at the designated civil halls. For those who prefer a civil ceremony, the Rome Municipal Council offers several locations in which to get married:

  • Santa Maria in Tempulo (in the Vignola Mattei complex) is a deconsecrated church reserved for civil marriages
  • Sala Rossa (the red room), located inside Campidoglio.
  • Sala Azzurra (the Blue Room) located in Ostia
  • "Spiaggia degli Sposi" located in Ostia

For Symbolic Ceremony or Renewal of Vows there is a wide variety of Villas, Castles, Restaurants, Gardens, Seaside Resorts, Intimate Beaches, Museums to choose from. Based on your wishes and preferences we may advice on the ideal venue for your wedding.
